’CULTURE CLASH’ was the first solo exhibition in Japan by Welsh artist, graphic designer and filmmaker Mark James. The work inspired by his visits to Japan over the last 20 years. Taking Japanese cultural icons and reworking them in his own unique style. The show, which was supported by Wales Arts International, featured new and existing pieces, including collage based artwork, using James’ signature style of manipulating garbage bags to create new forms. From a black garbage bag Tanuki, to a samurai helmet made from pharmaceutical packaging.

The show ran from 20th to 27th October at the RFW Showroom in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo. With an opening reception on Friday 21st October. With very special guest DJ, Mr. Kurino of United Arrows.

’CULTURE CLASH’ はウェールズ人アーティストのデザイナーで映像作家のマーク・ジェームズによる日本初の個展になります。

今回の作品は過去20年間に日本を訪れた経験からインスピレーションを得て、日本文化のシンボルをピックアップし、独自のスタイルで再構築したものになります。Wales Arts Internationalの支援を受けて開催されるこの展示会では、ゴミ袋を加工して新しい形を作り出すジェームズの特徴的なコラージュベースのアートワークなど、新旧の作品が披露されます。黒いゴミ袋のたぬきから、医薬品のパッケージで作った武士の兜まで、新作デジタル作品とともに展示いたします。

展示会は2022年10月20日から10月27日まで渋谷区富ヶ谷にあるRFWのショールームで開催いたします。 オープニングレセプションは10月21日（金曜日）18:00からマーク・ジェームズを招いて開催いたしますので、皆様のお越しを心よりお待ちしております。
